Comenius team: How did you accept the fact that you were selected by us as a woman – heroine for our WOW project?

 

E. S.: I regard it for special appreciation of my entire life work and I was very delighted that just young people observe and notice things around them which lead to progress especially in the area of humanism and in solving serious issues to which, unfortunately, many people are indifferent. I would not title myself as a  heroine, although, I admit that to change , that time thinking of people in such area as the fight against cancer and eliminate persistent views and major gaps in informedness, required courage, energy and firm nerves.

 

Comenius team:Do you bring up and educate young generation of specialists, to whom you hand over your precious lifetime experience and knowledge?

 

E. S.: I had luck to good teachers, in my professional life, who led me professionally, and they also instilled in me good advice that we should never give up, even when a person faces failure or disappointment. And it is in oncology in each direction very necessary. Today I am lucky to have nice co-workers. Not only here at home but also abroad, where together we solve a number of problems by means of initiative projects. It feels good to carry a lot of new ideas to young people whose work is the hope for the future.

 

Comenius team:What level is Slovakia ranged at when compared with other countries in terms of cancer and its treatment, and how do you assess its current status?

 

E. S.: From the point of view and perspective of epidemiology experts Europe in is still divided into East and West. With regard to cancer incidence and mortality, the Eastern part of Europe is in worse conditions, despite the fact that cancer treatment in our country is on very good professional level, comparable with other countries. In some ways, there is still a lot to improve, it is not just training to healthy lifestyle, the awareness of the risks and the need for early detection of the disease starting, but also the development of psycho-social patient care. Still more is true – it is not enough to cure a patient, but also to take care of him.

 

Comenius team: What is your opinion on folk healers?

 

E. S.: Folk healers should not interfere in the professional treatment of cancer. Another thing is the use of complementary therapies to be applied to eliminate or mitigate various accompanying events, either of the disease itself or disease treatment. It's so called integrative oncology, which must also be led by specialists with controlled specialized education.

 

Comenius team: You often encounter incurably ill people... does not it leave after-effects on you in the form of depression, helplessness?

 

E. S.: Life is also accompanied by death and we should be well prepared for that fact. It is easy to say, but the reality is different. Each unsuccessful struggle with the disease frustrates especially when it comes to young people. Nevertheless, it is compensated by achievements in many cancers, where in the past we were totally helpless.

 

Comenius team: Would you change a doctor profession for any other ?

 

E. S.: Though there were some moments associated with a kind of discontent, I didn´t have feeling that I have chosen, the way often full of obstacles, badly and that I should look for another one. But if I had to change the profession, what is the imaginary idea, I would like to be a vet to help living beings, who cannot say what bothers them. It sounds a bit pathetic, but I think it would probably make me joy.

 

Comenius team: What is the secret of your success?

 

E. S.: What is success? For each of us something different. For me, the work that enjoys me, which also brings some benefit and enjoyment.

 

Comenius team: Which award is for you the most valuable and which one are you the most proud of?

 

E. S.: Personally, I consider the most valuable the recognition for my work, which I received on the 64th General Assembly of the World Health Organization in Geneva in 2011. It was amazing feeling when in the faces of delegates of all the nations of the world came to Slovakia together with Panama, Costarica, Chad, China and Maldives such award and just to me, the only woman in this group of award-winning and just from Europe.

 

Comenius team: Why has a yellow daffodil become a symbol of cancer?

 

E. S.: The cradle of a Yellow daffodil comes from Ireland, where the League Against Cancer chose this flower as a symbol of hope for the national collection, which has been traditionally organized there for 30 years as a Daffodil Day. Whereas, our national collection has become popular as well, this symbol is associated also with our work and our mission.

 

Comenius team: If you could change anything in this world, what would it be?

 

E. S.: To change something in this world needs a magic wand. Since I hasn´t got it yet, it remains just a desire to have it, to remove human stupidity which has inflicted in the world huge losses and wrong in each direction.

Vyspovedali sme pani doktorku Evu Sirackú...

 

Comenius tím: Ako ste prijali fakt, že sme si Vás vybrali ako ženu – hrdinku pre náš WOW projekt?

E. S.: Považujem to za mimoriadne ocenenie mojej celoživotnej práce a veľmi ma potešilo, že práve mladí ľudia si všímajú veci okolo seba, ktoré smerujú k pokroku najmä v oblasti humanizmu a v riešení závažných vecí, ku ktorým, žiaľ, veľa ľudí je ľahostajných. Ja by som sa však hrdinkou nenazývala i keď priznám, že zmeniť vtedajšie zmýšľanie ľudí v takej oblasti, ako je boj proti rakovine a odstrániť pretrvávajúce názory a veľké medzery v informovanosti, vyžadovalo odvahu, energiu aj pevné nervy.

 

Comenius tím: Vychovávate si mladú generáciu špecialistov, ktorým odovzdávate svoje vzácne celoživotné skúsenosti a poznatky?

E. S. : Ja som mala vo svojom profesionálnom živote šťastie na dobrých učiteľov, ktorí ma odborne viedli, ale vštepovali mi aj dobré rady, že sa netreba nikdy vzdávať, i keď sa človek stretne s neúspechom, alebo sklamaním. A to je v oblasti onkológie v každom smere veľmi potrebné. Dnes mám šťastie na dobrých spolupracovníkov. Nielen tu doma, ale i v zahraničí, kde spoločne riešime množstvo problémov iniciatívnymi projektmi. Je to dobrý pocit prenášať mnohé nové myšlienky na mladých ľudí, ktorých práca je nádejou do budúcnosti.

 

Comenius tím: Na akej úrovni sa nachádza Slovensko v porovnaní so zahraničím čo sa týka rakoviny a jej liečby a ako hodnotíte jeho súčasný stav?

E. S.: Z pohľadu odborníkov v epidemiológii Európa sa stále delí na východnú a západnú. Čo sa týka výskytu rakoviny i úmrtnosti, je východná časť Európy na tom horšie, napriek tomu, že liečba rakoviny u nás je na veľmi dobrej odbornej úrovni, porovnateľnej s inými krajinami. V niektorých smeroch ale treba ešte veľa vylepšiť, nie je to len výchova k zdravému životnému štýlu, k uvedomovaniu si rizika a potreba včasného zistenia počínajúcej choroby, ale aj rozvoj psychosociálnej starostlivosti o pacienta. Stále viac platí – pacienta nestačí len liečiť, ale sa o neho aj starať.

 

Comenius tím: Aký je Váš názor na ľudových liečiteľov?

E. S.: Ľudoví liečitelia by nemali zasahovať do odbornej liečby rakoviny. Iná vec je používanie doplňujúcich spôsobov liečby, ktoré sa uplatňujú pri odstraňovaní alebo zmierňovaní rôznych sprievodných javov, či už samej choroby alebo liečby. Je to tzv. integratívna onkológia, ktorá však tiež musí byť vedená špecialistami s kontrolovaným odborným vzdelaním.

 

Comenius tím: Často sa stretávate s nevyliečiteľne chorými... nezanecháva to na Vás stopy v podobe depresie, bezmocnosti?

E. S.: Život sprevádza i smrť a na to by sme mali byť aj pripravení. Ono sa to ľahko povie, skutočnosť je ale iná. Každý neúspešný boj s touto chorobou deprimuje najmä, keď ide o mladých ľudí. Vyrovnávajú to však dosiahnuté úspechy u viacerých rakovinových chorôb, kde sme boli v minulosti úplne bezmocní.

 

Comenius tím: Vymenili by ste povolanie lekárky za niečo iné?

E. S. : I keď boli niekedy chvíle spojené s akousi nespokojnosťou, nemala som pocit, že by som si túto cestu, často plnú prekážok, zle vybrala a že by som mala hľadať inú. Ak by som ale musela toto povolanie zmeniť, čo je taká imaginárna predstava, chcela by som byť veterinárkou a pomáhať živému tvoru, ktorý nevie povedať, čo ho trápi. Znie to asi trocha pateticky, ale myslím si, že by mi to asi robilo radosť.

 

Comenius tím: Čo je tajomstvom vášho úspechu?

Čo je to úspech? Pre každého z nás niečo iné. Pre mňa práca, čo ma baví, ktorá prináša aj nejaký úžitok aj radosť.

 

E. S. : Ktoré ocenenie je pre Vás najcennejšie a na ktoré ste najviac hrdá?

Za najcennejšie považujem uznanie za moju prácu, ktorého sa mi dostalo na 64. Valnom zhromaždení Svetovej zdravotníckej organizácie v Ženeve v roku 2011. Bol to úžasný pocit, keď pred delegátmi všetkých národov sveta dostalo sa Slovensku spolu s Panamou, Costaricou, Čadom, Čínou a Maledivami také ocenenie a to práve mne, jedinej žene v tejto skupine ocenených a z Európy.

 

Comenius tím: Prečo sa stal žltý narcis symbolom ligy proti rakovine?

Žltý narcis má kolísku v Írsku, kde si ich Liga proti rakovine zvolila tento kvet ako symbol nádeje pre národnú zbierku, ktorú tam organizuje tradične už 30 rokov ako Deň narcisov. Keďže sa i naša národná zbierka stala populárnou, je tento symbol spojený aj s našou prácou a jej poslaním.

 

E. S.: Keby ste mohli niečo zmeniť na tomto svete, čo by to bolo?

Zmeniť niečo na tomto svete potrebuje čarovný prútik. Keďže ho ale nemám, zostáva len túžba ho mať, aby odstránil ľudskú hlúposť, ktorá už napáchala na celom svete obrovské škody v každom smere.

To bolo WOW!

V dňoch 3.10. – 8.10.2013 sme v našom meste a škole privítali návštevu našich partnerov z projektu Comenius – učiteľov a žiakov zo škôl v Nemecku, Taliansku, Poľsku a Malty.

Bolo pre nás cťou že sme mali dňa 7.10.2013 možnosť opýtať sa MUDr.Evy Sirackej, DrSc. na jej prácu, názory a skúsenosti nadobudnuté počas jej dlhoročnej práce pri pomáhaní ťažko chorým ľuďom.

 

Prítomnosť, myšlienky a odpovede pani doktorky zanechali nielen v nás, ale aj u našich priateľov z partnerských škôl hlboký dojem. Jej slová sú pre nás povzbudením v našej práci, sú novou výzvou zapájať sa do dobrovoľníckych akcií a presvedčenie, že myšlienka pomôcť ľuďom, ktorí to potrebujú nám nikdy nebude cudzia.

 

Všetci naši hostia navštívili našu krajinu a mesto po prvý krát. Podmanila si ich majestátnosť perly regiónu Spiš – Spišský hrad a čarokrásne výhľady na krajinu, umocnené nádherným slnečným dňom. Prechádzka okolo Štrbského plesa, ako aj návšteva Ochtinskej aragonitovej jaskyne, Múzeum letectva, historické centrum nášho krásneho mesta ich presvedčili, že Východné Slovensko má čo ponúknuť svojim návštevníkom. Hlboko na nich zapôsobila úžasná atmosféra a počet ľudí, ktorí sa aktívne alebo pasívne zúčastnili Medzinárodného maratóna mieru.Naši hostia nešetrili superlatívmi na miesto kde žijeme, pracujeme, a na ktoré sme takí hrdí. A my sme veľmi radi, že sme im umožnili utvoriť si pravdivý obraz o nás, našich ľuďoch a krajine.

 

Veríme, že i spolupráca v druhej polovici trvania projektu a naše vzájomné stretnutia prinesú úžitok z kooperácie učiteľov z rôznych krajín, a čo je najdôležitejšie, zvýši motiváciu učiteľov a žiakov pre podobné aktivity a tešíme sa na ďalšie stretnutie projektových partnerov ktoré sa uskutoční v dňoch 17.3. až 21.3.2014 v partnerskej škole v Poľsku.

A few words about voluntary work.

 

Volunteering can be defined in different ways , but generally speaking it is a certain practice of people working for the benefit of others without payment for time and services provided.

 

Deeply within each of us is the ability to step out and help those who need it. Volunteering strengthens our core European values: solidarity and social living. For volunteering you will not get a tangible reward, although it can get a lot more than you think.Reward surely can be a smile on the face of a child, good feeling of renovation of ancient monuments, obtaining funds for people who are suffering, or new friendships and life experiences.Volunteering result is worth the effort and especially it has the enormous importance to society.

 

Volunteer work is not an activity, it is a process -the personal process, accessible to all, at all times, regardless of age, background, nationality and abilities, the  process of cultural openness and mutual progress. Educational process by which it is closely linked to personal and social interest

 

Countless young people throughout the world volunteer in various projects every year. They not only help to others but also develop their personalities and skills as well.It is up to us to join them and experienced the wonderful feeling of work done unselfishly. Therefore, it pays to be a volunteer.As long as you never try it, you will not know what it is like. It may not be on the opposite side of the globe because those opportunities are offered daily in your vicinity.Maybe right now in front of you, maybe behind you, maybe under your window....

 

Today, we have invited a woman, a significant personality who has been working in the field of voluntary for decades. A nationwide event that brings together young and old, rich and poor is associated with her name. And we all us students of Secondary veterinary school in Barca have been actively involved in this event for several years.

 

Niekoľko slov o dobrovoľníckej práci.

 

Dobrovoľníctvo sa môže definovať rôznymi spôsobmi, ale vo všeobecnosti sa dá povedať, že ide o aktivity ľudí pracujúcich v prospech iných osôb bez platenia za poskytnutý čas a služby.

 

Hlboko v každom z nás sa nachádza schopnosť vykročiť a pomôcť tým, ktorí to potrebujú. Dobrovoľníctvo posilňuje naše základné európske hodnoty: solidaritu a sociálnu súdržnosť.Za dobrovoľnícku činnosť nedostanete hmatateľnú odmenu, napriek tomu sa dá získať oveľa viac, než si myslíte. Odmenou môže byť určite úsmev na tvári dieťaťa, dobrý pocit z renovácie starobylej pamiatky, získania finančných prostriedkov pre ľudí, ktorí trpia, či nové priateľstvá a životné skúsenosti. Výsledok dobrovoľníckej práce stojí za námahu a hlavne má obrovský význam pre celú spoločnosť.

 

Dobrovoľnícka práca nie je činnosť, je to proces. Proces osobný a prístupný všetkým, v každom okamihu, bez ohľadu na vek, pôvod, národnosť a schopnosti. Proces kultúrnej otvorenosti a vzájomného napredovania. Proces vzdelávací, pri ktorom je úzko prepojený osobný a spoločenský záujem.

 

Nespočetné množstvo mladých ľudí po celom svete každoročne dobrovoľníči v rôznych projektoch. Nielenže pomáhajú, ale rozvíjajú aj svoju osobnosť, zručnosti. Je na nás, aby, sme sa k nim pridali a zažili ten krásny pocit z nezištne vykonanej práce. Preto, byť dobrovoľníkom sa oplatí. Kým nezažiješ, nevieš, aké to je. Nemusí to byť na opačnej strane zemegule, veď príležitosti sa ti ponúkajú každodenne v tvojej blízkosti. Možno práve teraz pred tebou, možno za tebou, možno pod tvojím oknom…

 

Dnes sme si pozvali ženu, významnú osobnosť, ktorá na poli dobrovoľnosti pôsobí už desiatky rokov. S jej menom sa spája celonárodná akcia, ktorá spája starých i mladých, bohatých aj chudobných....Aj my, študenti Strednej odbornej školy veterinárnej v Barci sa jej už niekoľko rokov aktívne zúčastňujeme. Je to Deň narcisov.

We would like to show you the project work we have done so far.

 

In this picture you can see the notice board informing about Comenius partners, project plans and aims, important dates. It is located in the entrance hall of our schol, so everyone is informed about the project we are working on.

 

The second noticeboard is upstairs and informs about the results of competitions within the project and shows students´works and designs – logos and pictures of nominated women.

 

The third and biggest noticeboard is downstairs and shows all work we have done – the school winning logo and the project logo, introduces our woman heroine and what we have found about her, how she answered our questions, the way of our mutual communication, reports and photos from project meetings in Pforzheim and Policoro. The rest of the space is left for materials from other meetings – Malta, Poland and Germany.

 

This is a brief overview of our activities and I hope you aren´t bored. I have to say we are pleased that we are working on this extraordinary project.

„Women of the World, Wonders of the World“

 

Daffodil´s day - 12 April 2013

 

This year, 12 April in Slovakia , for the 17thtime, volunteers with small daffodil pins collected money not only in the streets of Košice but throughout the whole country.

The daffodil pinned to the coat symbolizes not only the willingness to fight cancer, but also the idea of fellowship and cooperation in fighting the disease. The League Against Cancer is the official organizer of the event.

 

In the picture you can see a team of 10 volunteers from our school .

On Friday morning these students attended the Daffodil Day – an event to support raising money for Cancer Counsil.

They started already in the morning to give people little yellow flowers of daffodils and the main goal was to raise money to support a good thing. They were walking up and down the streets in Košice to reach as many people as possible.

 

Pensioners, children, pupils, students, adults,employees, employers, everybody contributed by voluntary contributions and in return they were given a little daffodil from our team.

 

We handed out about 300 daffodils and raised more than 400 euros. All this money has gone to the Cancer Council to provide treatment and better life for people with cancer.

 

We are so full of joy to keep helping people suffering from this serious illness.

 

And we would like to thank everyone who attended this event.
